What is Direct to Garment (DTG) printing?

Direct-to-garment, or DTG, is a printing procedure through which you can spray the ink onto the garment. The fibers of the material ment soak up the ink sprayed onto it. The process is similar to printing on paper. However, it's done on clothing.

The primary benefit of DTG is that it's convenient to print one-off is because there is practically no setup time involved in the method. For instance, you have an online store that connects with a third-party Direct To Garment Printing provider.

After your customer places an order for a t-shirt on your online store, the DTG service provider automatically receives the order. The company then starts printing the design onto the t-shirt. After it's done, the shirt is delivered to the customer, but it's under your label.

How does it difference from Screen Printing?

Screen printing is the process that ink go through the fabric with the help of mesh and squeegee. This method good for: if your design is solid color, and you have a lot to print  at a time with the same design. Each color is more time, extra screen and stencil, which can cost more money for the couple of t-shirts. How does it work?

STEP 1-EXPERT REVIEW

Our experts review customer's design to make sure it follows DTG Artwork requirements. Then our team works on design to make it ready to the production. If customer does not provide a mock-up file don't worry, we prepare a visual proof to show you the printing placement, size, color, etc. Mock-up is an electronic version, printed version is not always the same as you see on computer. So, if you are particular with some details, we should know about it before production to avoid making mistakes. We don't proceed the order until we get your approvement.

STEP 2 - PRETREATMENT

DTG Printing generally needs a pretreatment solution that works as a "primer." The primer is designed to create a link between the ink and material. The process is necessary for all dark-colored clothing and also can be performed on light-colored clothing as an optional.

It is important to place the shirt on a surface that is flat and smooth during printing. For this reason, we use a plate so that the print heads stay in one place and do not move away with the media. If this happens, you might yield blurry results.

Approved file is sent to the printer. For light garments, the machine passes over the surface of the garment, while applying a highly controlled spray of each of the inks used. It works well for one or more passages. For dark clothing, it first establishes a white undercoat, then starts to print the processing inks.

step 4 - before getting ready

Before it's ready, you will notice that the fabric on which you print has completely soaked the ink. It does not stay on the fabric like a sticker like old-school shirt printing techniques.

The fibers of your shirt soak up the ink from the printer to create a beautiful design that is realistic. There is no chance of the paint to peel or crack away. The process ensures that the print stays in one place so that your shirt can have a long life.

Many people prefer hypoallergenic fabric because it causes few reactions. This is why this fabric is commonly used for making clothes of babies and children. It is a highly absorbent and flexible material which makes it comfortable to wear in all weathers. However, once the fabric is dyed, it tends to fade over time. Thus, cotton requires special attention for maintenance when you wash or iron it. Cotton is also sensitive to humidity. It may develop molds if it is stored incorrectly and without taking the proper measures.

Hypoallergenic causes few reactions, which is why it is used a lot for clothes for babies and children. It is also absorbent and flexible which makes it comfortable. The dyed fabric tends to fade over time, cotton requires special attention for maintenance (washing / ironing) indeed, it is a fragile fiber which shrinks during washing (and possibility of tearing), therefore which requires careful washing. When it comes to Hoodies, sweatshirts, or crop-tops, we mostly use of 50/50 or 80/20. This is referred to as "poly-cotton" by various brands because the fabric is a mixture of two materials. T-shirts that are made with a 50/50 blend generally tend to hold their shape well. They are also light. Thus, they can be worn as everyday attire in hot environments.
